They provide detailed comments for both the authors and the editor, along with a recommendation to accept the manuscript, request revisions, or reject it.

When reviewers' recommendations differ substantially, the editor may consult an additional reviewer or exercise editorial judgment before reaching a final decision.
  • Decision and author notification: The editor communicates the decision to the corresponding author, accompanied by the reviewers' comments and any recommendations for revision.
  • Revision and publication: Manuscripts accepted without revision proceed to production for publication. When revisions are requested, authors submit a revised manuscript together with a point-by-point response addressing each reviewer comment. Depending on the extent of the revisions, the manuscript may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation or assessed directly by the handling editor before a final publication decision is made.

What are the Various Types of Peer Review?

Open Peer Review

By knowing the names and affiliations, reviewers can spot self-plagiarism, prior work, or potential conflicts of interest. This is also true in the case of open peer review but not so much in the case of double-blind peer review.

Double-Blind Peer Review

In double-blind peer review, authors and reviewers don't know each other's identities, though the handling editor usually knows who the authors are. The idea is to judge the manuscript on its own merits rather than on the authors' reputation, institution, or career stage.

  • Cuts down on bias tied to an author's reputation, institution, gender, or career stage.
  • Keeps the focus on the quality of the research itself.
  • Gives both sides some cover to be more honest in their assessment.

Cons

  • Author identity sometimes leaks through, especially when a preprint is already posted online.
  • Keeping everyone anonymous takes extra administrative work, and it still doesn't erase every source of bias.

Not every article you come across is a peer-reviewed article. Below are some measures to ensure you pick a peer-reviewed article. 

1. It appears in a scholarly journal rather than a magazine or general news publication.

2. The tone is formal and academic, written for a specialist rather than a general reader.

3. It opens with an abstract that summarizes the study before the full text begins.

4. It follows a standard format (e.g., IMRaD for Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion).

5. Claims are supported by in-text citations, with a complete bibliography listing every source referenced.

6. Most authors are affiliated with a university or research institution, as opposed to submitting work independently.
