About

Professor Benkeblia joined the Department of Life Sciences in January 2008. His academic background includes a Master degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition, a Doctorate in Natural Sciences and a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Science from Kagoshima University, Japan. He has postdoctoral experience in Algeria, France, USA and Japan.
With thirty five (35) years experience in teaching and research at tertiary level, Professor Benkeblia has displayed outstanding productivity in agricultural science and related discipline (including climate change and crop science) of research output: authorship of books and journals, authoring special issues, being editor/series editor and conference presentations. His research focuses on crop science, focusing mainly on the physiology of a wide range of crops. Professor Benkeblia’s research focuses on the basic and applied aspects of physiology, biochemistry and nutritional features of crops, with emphasis on tropical crops from the last few years. He has contributed to areas of crop physiology, quality, best harvesting practices and storage, and indirectly to utilization, marketing and policy. Given the time and resources he has mobilized, this constitutes a significant service to the Jamaican agriculture and the country in general.
His teaching, research and service activities have had a significant and positive impacts on sustaining agriculture locally, regionally and internationally. Prof. N. Benkeblia was the among the three Reviewer Editor of the final report on Food Security, of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), and this report was approved by the United Nation in August 2019, and for this achievement he received an award from the Government of Jamaica in recognition of his contribution.
On the other hand, Prof. N Benkeblia outstanding contribution to crop science was a key decision in his appointment as Editorial Board member of many international scientific peer-review journals in the field of crop science, as well as Editor-in-Chief of two other journals. He was also appointed member of the Regional Committee of Scientific Experts by the AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie) for his expertise and involvement in regional and international crop science.
Professor Benkeblia has written or edited 22 books or journal volumes, 45 book chapters, and he authored more than 120 research and review peer reviewed journal articles.
